THE UCC’S ACTIVE HELP IN HAITI
Six Weeks after the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti, the ACT Alliance has assisted more than 150,000 people with direct aid, according to published reports. With steady support continually rolling in from key organizations such as the United Church of Christ, most of the aid has gone toward supplying fresh water, sanitation efforts, shelter, meals and food staples. Relief items and services including family kits, hygiene sets, medical assistance and health-clinic supplies continue to be distributed.
As a vital participant in the ACT Alliance, the UCC is assisting some of the most vulnerable among of the victims in Port-au-Prince. As of February 22, earthquake-relief gifts sent to the UCC have totaled $1,304,864, including online donations.
All across the U.S. stories are being reported on different ways UCC churches are raising funds for Haiti Relief. First Congregational UCC of Greeley, Co. hosted a concert that raised $6,130, 19 baby kits and 55 hygiene kits. But one of the most heartwarming gifts received was 70 cents from two guests of the St. Herman’s Monastery on the West Side of Cleveland, said Susan M. Sanders, the UCC’s minister for global sharing resources. “It is all they had and they chose to share it with the people of Haiti – talk about the widow’s mite.”
Joining the UCC among ACT Alliance members currently working in Haiti are the Lutheran World Federation, Norwegian Church Aid, Christian Aid, Church World Service, Diakonie Katastrofehilfe, and Christian Reformed World Relief Committee Church of Sweden.

The UCC Sending Help to Chile
The United Church of Christ and it Global Ministries partners are working in Chile and responding to request for assistance through ACT Alliance and Church World Service (CWS). CWS has worked in Chile for many years in emergency preparedness training and assistance to the country's sizable population, assisting many Chilean organizations. CWS is immediately providing emergency assistance such as food, water and shelter.
Rev. Felix Ortiz-Cotto, Global Ministries Latin America and Caribbean area executive has been in contact with our partners in Chile and has expressed our concern and best wishes on behalf of Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the UCC. Global Ministries have received good news that our missionaries in Chile are all doing fine and are safe.
Week of Compassion of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and One Great Hour of Sharing of the UCC are sending the initial emergency support of $2,500 each to the three partner organizations in Chile as of this week.
